Stag – Corten Steel Sculpture

Standing tall at 2.88 metres, this striking corten steel stag sculpture by Aaron Gamble appears both grounded and ethereal—as if it’s always belonged to the valley it now watches over. Crafted using a low-poly design technique, the minimalist faceted form captures the spirit of the animal without unnecessary detail—just strength, presence, and stillness.
Installed on the first landing at Tūpare Gardens, the sculpture is a contemporary guardian of the landscape. Weathered and raw, its surface will continue to evolve with time—developing a rich rusty patina that protects it from further oxidisation and connects it to the land it rests upon.
Aaron Gamble, the artist behind Goat Point, is a keen outdoorsman whose work is deeply informed by time spent in the wilderness. His medium of choice—corten steel—reflects his values: endurance, simplicity, and transformation. Each piece is made to live outside, to age gracefully, and to become part of the environment it inhabits.
Long before paths were laid and gardens carved into the hillside, it’s imagined a solitary stag might have stood watch over this valley. Not born of this land, but drawn to it—drawn to the way the river whispers through the flats, and how the mist curls like memory through the trees…
