Printmaking offers a unique blend of endless experimentation and formidable obstacles. This dynamic makes the medium particularly meaningful to me and central to my artistic practice. My work intuitively engages with materials and themes, particularly the exploration of my shadow self. This manifests as a strong yet insecure masculine figure, embodying a deep sense of powerlessness and fragility, revealing the paradox of strength intertwined with vulnerability.

In “Flight Risk,” I examine the performativity of power and how fragility can emerge through mutation. This piece reflects societal power structures, such as patriarchy, that perpetuate injustice and marginalisation. By drawing on 20th-century propaganda posters, I critique the persuasive tactics that uphold these harmful systems, inviting viewers to reconsider the dynamics of power in our world.

The methods I used to create this work are the result of extensive experimentation during the final year of my degree at WITT Te Pukenga. Trace monotype involves rolling out a thin layer of ink on a surface, then placing paper over it and applying various marks on the back to transfer soft, fuzzy lines onto the paper.
