This body of work for Big Small explores the profound symbolism of two iconic birds from Aotearoa: the Tūī and the Pīwakawaka. These birds represent the interplay between strength and harmony—both essential to fostering connection and community.

The larger piece, Call to the Ngahere, features the Tūī, renowned for its powerful and melodic call that resonates throughout the forest. This commanding bird serves as a symbol of strength, leadership, and the potential of a unified voice—a voice that can inspire action and solidarity. The Tūī’s call is a vivid reminder that while one voice can spark change, collective effort has the potential to amplify that power, creating opportunities for connection and resilience.

The smaller work, Together We Soar, showcases the Pīwakawaka in graceful flight. Known for its lively, intricate movements and joyful presence, the Pīwakawaka embodies connection, harmony, and the quieter strength of nurturing relationships. Its gentle persistence reminds us of the importance of small, continuous acts of togetherness that weave the fabric of our communities.

Together, these artworks create a meaningful dialogue. The Tūī’s bold call encourages us to consider the value of unity and shared purpose, while the Pīwakawaka’s delicate movements celebrate the bonds that sustain and uplift us. These complementary forces—one “big,” loud and commanding, the other “small,” subtle and persistent—echo the rhythms of the ngahere, inviting us to reflect on our own roles in fostering understanding, collaboration, and unity.
