The Way Back Home
The theme of The Way Back Home sparked inspiration for me on multiple levels, connecting the physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of home. My work draws upon the Kuaka (Godwit) as a symbol—a bird renowned for its record-breaking migration from Alaska to Aotearoa. Its journey, spanning vast distances, mirrors our search for belonging, identity, and the profound bond we share with the land.
A pivotal moment in my own journey home is the first glimpse of Mt. Taranaki from Pātea. This striking maunga rises with quiet strength, evoking a profound sense of comfort and familiarity. For me, it symbolizes both arrival and remembrance—a beacon of homecoming rooted in the landscape’s enduring presence.
In my pencil artwork, I depict the Kuaka in intricate detail, soaring above a loosely sketched Mt. Taranaki. This contrast emphasizes the bird’s resilience and grace, set against the mountain’s quiet, steadfast guardianship. The composition is not just a visual exploration but a metaphor for the relationship between humanity and nature—a reminder that we are kaitiaki, caretakers of this land.
Through this work, I reflect on the importance of home as both a personal and collective responsibility. “Home” is more than a physical place; it is a spiritual connection, a responsibility we hold for future generations. By nurturing and respecting the land, we ensure it remains a sanctuary—not just for us, but for those who will call it home long after we are gone.
My hope is to inspire contemplation on our shared journey and the delicate balance we maintain with the environment. Just as the Kuaka navigates vast oceans to return to its nesting grounds, may we all find our way back to the essence of home, rooted in respect for the natural world and the legacy we leave behind.
