“Native flora and fauna have been prominent in Anna’s work for a lifetime. Influenced as a young child by a small bird feeder placed outside her window to keep her engage in the early hours of the morning. Exploring grew to visiting deep in the national parks and having the privilege of seeing rare and endangered species from a very young age. This has fostered a lifelong appreciation for our ngahere and protecting the environment we live among.
The Erased series begun after discovering an old chalkboard ready to go in the skip. The body of work acknowledges the loss significant species to New Zealand. The extinct Huia has a significant place in our whenua and history. What we have around us is not ours to own, but ours to protect and care for as the kaitiaki of the land.
The last Huia was sighted in Aotearoa in 1907.”
