These pieces are a reflection of Taranaki’s unwavering strength, resilience, and courage, embodied through the central figure of a Taranaki-style wheku. The wheku, with its bold and distinctive features, represents the mana and wairua of our tūpuna, standing as a guardian of our whakapapa and identity. Its presence is a tribute to the unyielding spirit of Taranaki iwi, who have endured challenges with determination and pride.
The background weaves together intricate Māori patterns, each carefully chosen to symbolize the qualities that define strength, unity, and perseverance.
The two pieces in black Perspex is a tribute to the strength, identity, and resilience of Taranaki, embodied through the bold presence of a Taranaki-style kowhaiwhai etched in the Perspex.
By using black Perspex, a modern material, this work bridges past and present, acknowledging the evolving nature of Māori art while staying true to traditional narratives.
