When I was Silver
Hand Embossed Pewter Coin in Custom
Coin 465 mm Diameter.
Frame Dimension 630 x 630 mm
$2150
This hand-embossed pewter coin is a one-of-a-kind replica of the original New Zealand 10-cent coin, once larger and silver in colour, featuring the iconic Māori koruru. Traditionally carved into the gables of a meeting house, the koruru is seen as the ‘guardian of the house.’ Though the 10-cent coin remains in circulation today, its size and appearance have changed more than once, reflecting the evolution of currency and the beauty in remembering that nothing in life is constant.
‘When I Was Silver’ invites viewers to reflect on the small details that often go unnoticed in our everyday lives, especially as we move more and more into cashless transactions. This artwork celebrates the nostalgic value of holding a piece of New Zealand’s past, present and future.
